Upcoming traffic restrictions on State Route 89a in Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon

SEDONA — The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers and area residents and businesses to plan for upcoming daytime full closures and lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon.

DAYTIME FULL CLOSURES

  • Full closures will be from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following days:
    • Tuesday, June 20 through Thursday June 22.
    • Tuesday, June 27 and Wednesday, June 28.
  • North- and southbound SR 89A will be closed to all traffic between the Owenby Way roundabout and the Midgley Bridge picnic area (mileposts 375-376).
    • NORTHBOUND DETOUR:  Sedona area drivers  traveling north to Flagstaff will use State Route 179 to Interstate 17.
    • SOUTHBOUND DETOUR:  Flagstaff area drivers traveling south to Sedona will use I-17 to SR 179.
  • The roadway will reopen each day after work hours.

SINGLE-LANE RESTRICTIONS

  • SR 89A will be intermittently narrowed to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel between the Owenby Way roundabout and Oak Creek Vista (mileposts 375-390). The restrictions will be in place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m from June 5 to 16 and on June 19, 23, 26, 29 and 30.
  • Flaggers and a pilot car will guide traffic through the work zone.
  • Speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.
  • No work will take place on the weekends.
  • The restrictions will be lifted each day after work hours.

The restrictions are needed as work continues on the SR 89A Oak Creek Canyon Improvements project, which includes rockfall mitigation, erosion control and a bridge rehabilitation.

Plan for lane restriction on State Route 89A in Cottonwood March 3

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises Cottonwood area drivers to plan for a lane closure on northbound State Route 89A on Friday, March 3.

Drivers should allow for extra travel time while the following daytime restriction is in place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Northbound SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane roughly between 12th and Main streets (milepost 353).
  • The sidewalk will be closed and pedestrian traffic diverted to the south side of the roadway at the intersections of 12th Street/SR 89A and Main Street/SR 89A.
  • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

The restriction is needed so crews can safely complete roadway repairs. Due to inclement weather, dates and times are subject to change.

Plan for overnight lane restrictions on State Route 89A (Milton Road) in Flagstaff July 10-15

The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising motorists to plan for overnight lane restrictions on State Route 89A (known locally as Milton Road) in Flagstaff during the final stages of work on a pavement rehabilitation project.

Drivers should slow down, proceed through the work zones with caution and watch for construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place daily from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. starting Sunday night, July 10, and ending Friday morning, July 15:

  • Portions of north- and southbound SR 89A will be narrowed intermittently to one lane in each direction between Forest Meadows Street and Phoenix Avenue.
  • A vehicle width limit of 16 feet will be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.

The restrictions are needed as crews continue working on sidewalks, driveways and curb ramps. Crews have completed the most significant work on the project, which was to remove the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. For more information, visit the project web page.

Overnight lane closures scheduled on State Route 89A between Jerome and Clarkdale May 31 – June 1

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for alternating lane closures on north- and southbound State Route 89A between Dundee Lane (milepost 345) and Desert Sky Drive (milepost 349) while crews complete fog seal work, which protects and extends the life of the pavement.

The following restrictions will occur from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday, May 31, and Monday, June 1:

SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel.
Flaggers and a pilot car will stop and direct drivers through the work zone

Plan for overnight lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Prescott Valley and Prescott May 31-June 4

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers in the Prescott area to plan for overnight lane restrictions on State Route 89A between Fain Road (milepost 325) and State Route 89 (milepost 317) while crews complete fog seal work, which protects and extends the life of the pavement.

Motorists should allow extra travel time, be prepared to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:

North- and southbound SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane in each direction overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 31 through Thursday, June 4.

Expect lane closures, up to 30-minute delays on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon through fall

SEDONA — Drivers who use State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon should plan for long delays and lane closures in both directions from just north of Sedona to the bottom of the switchbacks, this fall while crews complete hazard tree removal work and begin pavement preservation work.

Crews are currently removing hazard trees from both sides of SR 89A from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, until late October. Hazard trees are generally identified as dead or dying; pose a danger of falling into the roadway because of high winds, unstable soil or other factors; or otherwise can cause harm to life or property.

Pavement-improvement work will occur from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday nights through Thursday mornings, beginning in early October and continuing through mid-December.

After paving work is complete, crews will begin the replacement of over 30,000 feet of guardrail through the project. This work will continue through the spring.

The following traffic restrictions will be in place when crews are working:

  1. SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane only and drivers could experience delays up to 30 minutes.
  2. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct drivers through the work zone.
  3. Speeds will be reduced to 25 mph.

Seeking Public Information Regarding Two Investigations

FLAGSTAFF – On Saturday, August 17, 2019 Deputies responded to the area of Hwy 89A near milepost 389, the area commonly referred to as the switchbacks of Oak Creek Canyon, for a report of a recovered stolen vehicle. That same day Detectives responded to a deceased elderly male near the area the vehicle was located. Detectives are working to identify the deceased male.

At this point in the investigations, it is unknown if the two are connected. The Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from the public that may assist in the investigations.

The vehicle is described as a 2006 Silver Hyundai Sonata passenger car with an Arizona State flag front license plate. A photograph of the actual vehicle is attached to this release.

The Sheriff’s Office is requesting anyone who traveled Hwy89A between Sedona and Flagstaff Friday night through Saturday morning to please contact the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 928-226-5087.

Due to the ongoing investigations, no further details are available at this time.

ADOT to reschedule State Route 89 closure in Prescott

PRESCOTT – The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use State Route 89 in Prescott that overnight road closures scheduled to begin Thursday, January 3, have been postponed because of weather conditions. ADOT will announce the updated work schedule when it becomes available.

Work was scheduled to occur in conjunction with the ongoing project to widen and improve SR 89 between Deep Well Ranch Road and SR 89A. Learn more about the project at azdot.gov/SR89DeepWellRanch.

Expect lane closures on State Route 89A near Sedona November 26 to December 7

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for lane closures on north- and southbound State Route 89A near Sedona between mileposts 383 and 385 while crews maintain roadside vegetation.

The work is scheduled to occur on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, through Friday, Dec. 7.

  • SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane during daytime operations.
  • Flaggers and a pilot car will direct motorists through the work zone.
  • No restrictions are scheduled to be in place during weekends.
