Busy year ahead for highway projects in northern Arizona

PHOENIX – This year will be filled with highway system improvements for northern Arizona travelers, including the start of the latest Arizona Department of Transportation project expanding US 93 to four-lane divided highway between Wickenburg and Interstate 40.

Crews will soon launch a $35.5 million project on nearly 4 miles of US 93 just north of Wikieup, between Carrow and Stephens, connecting two sections of highway that have already been divided. That will provide a continuous stretch of divided four-lane highway from milepost 108, about 15 miles south of I-40, and milepost 121 near Wikieup.

With an eye toward an Interstate 11, ADOT has invested more than half a billion dollars over the past 20 years to turn the primary route between Phoenix and Las Vegas into modern four-lane divided highway. The upcoming project is part of $155 million in US 93 improvements planned over the next five years.

Currently all but 39 miles of the 200-mile drive from Wickenburg to the Nevada state line has been upgraded to a four-lane divided highway to improve traffic flow, support the movement of freight and enhance safety through this heavily traveled area. The entire northern segment of US 93 from Kingman to the Nevada state line (mileposts 1 to 68) is now a four-lane divided highway following the completion of a $71 million project in 2010.

Meanwhile, paving projects to repair long-term winter weather damage will continue in the Flagstaff area, with crews finishing paving along northbound I-17 from milepost 312 to the I-40 interchange and along the 17-mile stretch of I-40 between Cataract Lake and Parks west of Flagstaff.

Last year, crews rebuilt about 20 miles of highway in northern Arizona, providing a long-term fix to damage from freeze-thaw cycles and heavy traffic. In all, ADOT has improved or is in the process of improving 62 miles of interstate freeway in the Flagstaff area.

This spring, ADOT will launch a project to repave 13 miles of State Route 89A from Sedona to the scenic overlook between mileposts 374 and 387. The project will also install new guardrail.

In far northwestern Arizona, the decks of three Virgin River bridges along Interstate 15 will get makeovers starting early this year. Bridge Nos. 2 and 5 will get newly resurfaced decks. Bridge No. 4 will received a brand new deck.

In the Prescott area, ADOT will begin a project along 5 miles of SR 69 between Truwood Drive and Fain Road. Improvements include building a raised center median, new traffic signals and new left turn lanes at certain intersections. A multi-use path will also be constructed on the north side of SR 69 between Truwood and Navajo drives.

Final paving scheduled on US 93 north of Wickenburg

Drivers traveling on US 93 north of Wickenburg (mileposts 185 to 190) should allow extra travel time for next week starting Monday (April 18) through Thursday (April 21) as crews prepare for final paving on the project.

Crews will pave the northbound lanes on Monday and Tuesday (April 18 and 19) and the southbound lanes on Wednesday and Thursday (April 20 and 21).

Delays of up to 20 minutes during work hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. are expected.

Brief closures of US 60 and US 93 in Wickenburg for special event

Due to a special event, the junction of US 60 and US 93 at the south roundabout in downtown Wickenburg will close briefly from 11:30 a.m. to noon Monday (April 11) and again from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday (April 15).

The closures will allow more than 200 horses and riders participating in the 70th annual Desert Caballeros trail ride to cross US 60 the highway safely.

What to expect during the closures:

  • Eastbound US 60 will be closed at milepost 110 prior to Tegner Street.
  • Westbound US 60 will be closed at milepost 110 prior to the Hassayampa River Bridge.
  • Traffic destined for northbound US 93 will be stopped at the westbound US 60 closure.
  • Southbound US 93 will be closed at the south roundabout prior to milepost 200.
  • The Wickenburg Police Department will enforce the closures and provide traffic control.
  • Drivers will need to wait for horses to pass through, no alternate routes suggested.

Traffic will be guided through the work zone by pilot cars and minimal delays are expected between 4:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week. Speed will be reduced through the work zone.

As part of the final paving, crews will mill some of the existing pavement on the northbound lanes and drivers will be on rough road conditions until final paving is complete.

The widening project on US 93, north of Wickenburg, is almost complete and crews will switch northbound traffic back onto the northbound lanes between mileposts 185 and 190, tomorrow (Nov. 20) as part of a $12 million widening project.

Crews are scheduled to fully open the southbound lanes on Monday (Nov. 23) in the late afternoon. Drivers may be stopped intermittently for up to 15 minutes during the traffic switch to provide a safe work zone for construction personnel.

US 93 traffic switch planned for Thursday north of Wickenburg for widening project

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation continues to make considerable progress on an improvement project to widen and upgrade a five-mile segment of US 93 between State Route 71 and State Route 89, just north of Wickenburg.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, crews are scheduled to switch both directions of traffic to the newly constructed southbound lanes. As crews make preparations for the planned traffic switch, motorists may be stopped intermittently for up to 15 minutes at a time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Oct. 1.

While one travel lane will remain open in both directions, motorists should continue to be prepared to allow 10 to 15 minutes extra travel time through this segment (mileposts 185-190).

Once the traffic switch is complete, ADOT will begin work to repave and restripe the existing northbound lanes.

ADOT began this expansion project in February to widen US 93 from two lanes to a modern, four-lane divided highway. The $12.5 million project is expected to be completed in November.

Once completed, ADOT will move one step closer to the agency’s ultimate goal of transforming the entire 200-mile stretch from Wickenburg to the Hoover Dam bypass bridge into a modern, four-lane divided highway.

Since 1998, ADOT has invested more than $350 million in projects to upgrade the US 93 corridor, which stretches from Kingman to the Nevada state line and Wickenburg to Interstate 40 (a 23-mile segment of I-40 east of Kingman connects the north and south sections of US 93).

Currently, all but 46 miles of the 200-mile drive (more than 75 percent) from Wickenburg to the Nevada state line has been upgraded to a four-lane divided highway in an effort to improve traffic flow, support the movement of freight and enhance safety through this heavily traveled area.

Work continues on the expansion of US 93 north of Wickenburg

WICKENBURG — For the past three weeks, crews have been paving the new lanes on US 93 north of Wickenburg between mileposts 185 and 190. Work on the new roadway will continue through the end of September. While the project has not been impactful to motorists, drivers need to be aware of trucks entering and exiting the project site at much slower speeds.

Once the new roadway is paved, crews will switch traffic to the new lanes in order to replace pavement on the existing lanes in early October.

Drivers traveling tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 28, need to be aware of the increased weekend traffic and use extra caution around construction equipment and personnel working to pave the new roadway from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Normal work hours are 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

ADOT completes widening of another US 93 section

PHOENIX — For the past two decades, the Arizona Department of Transportation has made the US 93 corridor a priority, by methodically turning what was once a two-lane rural roadway into a modern four-lane divided highway along the primary travel route for Phoenix motorists headed to Las Vegas and a vital corridor for trade and commerce.

This past weekend, ADOT completed another widened section of US 93, approximately 20 miles north of Wikieup and moved one step closer to the agency’s ultimate goal of transforming the entire 200-mile stretch from Wickenburg to the Hoover Dam bypass bridge into a modern, four-lane divided highway.

The completed $20 million project widened the three-mile-long Antelope Wash segment of US 93 (mileposts 101-104), which included building two new southbound lanes and reconstructing the two northbound lanes to tie into the new roadway configuration.

This was one of two US 93 widening projects ADOT has been working on this year. In February, ADOT launched another expansion project along US 93 between state routes 71 and 89 (mileposts 185-190), just north of Wickenburg. The $12.5 million project will include converting the roadway from two lanes to four lanes and is expected to be completed in 2016.

Widening project on US 93 north of Wickenburg will affect traffic next week

WICKENBURG — For the past several months, a five-mile widening project on US 93 approximately three miles north of Wickenburg has been under way. Next week, beginning on Tuesday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 1, crews will be working on the existing roadway of US 93 at both ends of the project (mileposts 185 and 190) which will require a single lane restriction between 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Delays of up to 15 minutes are expected. US 93 runs north and south, not east and west as previously mentioned.

Crews will place temporary concrete barrier, shift the traffic lanes and restripe the roadway so they can continue the widening project. Drivers will be in this temporary configuration for the next three months. An 11-foot width restriction will be in place during that time.

Construction for temporary water line on US 93 west of Wickenburg next week

WICKENBURG — As work continues on the expansion project on US 93 (mileposts 185-190) west of Wickenburg, local motorists should be aware that crews will install a temporary construction water line affecting three driveways off of US 93 on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22 between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Access to the Moreton Air Park Road, Caballero Drive (Vista Royale) and the Antelope Creek Road will be limited during work hours as crews install a temporary construction water line.

Drivers will be guided through the work zone by flaggers and delays of up to 10 minutes are expected.
