PHOENIX — Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) officials announced today an $86,000 brownfields grant to the City of Winslow to remove asbestos and lead-based paint from the former LZ Budget Motel located along historic Route 66 at 1102 E. 2nd St., Winslow in Navajo County. ADEQ’s Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) will oversee this work.

Owned by the City of Winslow and located within the City’s redevelopment district in the heart of historic downtown, the approximate one-acre parcel former LZ Budget Motel site consists of four vacant structures in a severe state of deterioration due to previous fires, years of weathering and no maintenance. Unoccupied for years and the subject of frequent vandalism and vagrancy, this brownfields grant-funded environmental cleanup work is the next of several steps necessary to eliminate the blight and prepare the property for redevelopment that will emphasize the needs of the community and boost economic vitality.

“Recovering blighted properties by administering non-competitive grants through ADEQ’s brownfields program is just one way we accomplish environmentally responsible economic growth in our state,” ADEQ Waste Programs Division Director Laura Malone said. “Our staff works diligently with grant applicants to create customized solutions that maximize program benefits for each community’s unique needs.”

Brownfields are properties with active redevelopment potential hindered by known or perceived environmental contamination. Since it began in 2003, ADEQ’s brownfields grant program has funded more than 50 projects assisting local governments and nonprofits in completing environmental assessments and cleanup. Currently accepting applications, ADEQ’s brownfields grant program conducts projects through Arizona’s State Response Grant using funds provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

I-40 paving through Winslow

The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting on the final phase of paving through Winslow. Crews will be finishing the main portion of paving on both the westbound and eastbound lanes of I-40 this Friday (July 31) at (milepost 250-268).

Monday (Aug. 3) through Friday (Aug. 7) workers will be paving the interchange on and off ramps at Hipkoe Drive, North Park Drive, Transcon Lane and State Route 87. During this time, motorists will need to travel to the adjacent interchange east or west of the one being worked on to exit or enter I-40.

On Monday (Aug. 10), workers will begin to apply the final layer of asphalt over the top of what has already been replaced. This rubberized top layer allows for a quieter and smoother drive for motorists. This portion of the paving operation moves fairly quickly and it’s anticipated that crews will be finished by Friday (Aug. 21).

Crews will start replacing the SR 87 bridge deck, which crosses I-40 on the east side of Winslow, once all of the paving is completed. During replacement of the SR 87 bridge deck, north bound traffic will remain open during the entire project while southbound traffic will be diverted to the Transcon interchange.

Work hours will be 2 a.m. to sunset Monday through Friday. There will be narrow traffic lanes, wide load restrictions and a reduced speed limit through the work zones. Drivers are asked to use caution, watch for detour signs and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Drivers should expect narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits on I-40 through Winslow

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation begins a project on Monday, March 31 to reconstruct Interstate 40 bridges at Ruby Wash, Maple Street and Transcon Lane in Winslow.

The east- and westbound bridges at each location, six total, will be improved during the $3.8 million dollar project. Work includes replacing the bridge decks, new asphalt and some guardrail and drainage improvements.

Detour signs will be posted for alternate routes during its closure. Also, Transcon Lane, which also runs under I-40, will have intermittent lane closures, but will remain open to traffic. Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
