Leg of man severed by train

FLAGSTAFF — At approximately 0234 hours this morning, Officers were called to the area of the railroad tracks and Market Place near the railroad marker 339 in reference to a subject who was lying on the ground near the tracks with a severe leg injury.

When officers arrived in the area they located the subject lying on the south side of what appeared to be three sets of tracks. They observed the subject to have a severed left leg just below the knee.

The subject was identified as a 24 year old male, who was still conscious at the scene, although bleeding heavily from his wound.

Officers immediately rendered first aid by applying a tourniquet to the injured limb after requesting medics to the scene. The subject was stabilized by attending medics and transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center for further treatment.

The Flagstaff Police Department would like to remind all citizens of the inherent dangers of walking on or near the railroad tracks. The designated crossings are considered public property with specific crossing rules. All train tracks are private property. Never walk on tracks; it’s illegal trespass and highly dangerous.

Pedestrian Fatality in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — On Wednesday evening at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a vehicle and pedestrian collision which resulted in the death of the pedestrian on Fourth Street and Third Avenue, just south of the dedicated crosswalk at the intersection.

The deceased has been identified as 52 year old Franklin Morgan. Mr. Morgan had been attempting to cross the street and was struck by a south bound vehicle. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the driver’s actions.

Two Officers had been at the intersection of Fourth Street and Third Avenue when the collision occurred and witnessed the event. Lifesaving actions were taken, although the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries.

Snow in the weekend forecast

snow131204-06WILLIAMS — The weekend weather for Williams and Flagstaff include a chance of snow Sturday and Sunday. Ash Fork can expect rain showers and cooler temperatures.

In Williams and Flagstaff there is a chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. with wind gusts up to 30 mph. Tomorrow there is a chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Rain showers are predicted before 11 p.m. Rain and snow is expected after 11 p.m. with an accumulation of 1 inch possible. Snow and rain may continue Sunday morning with about a half-inch of new snow accumulation possible. High winds are expected throughout the weekend.

Ash Fork can expect rain tonight through Sunday with high winds.

Flagstaff Police asking assistance to identify suspect

FPD-4-23-1FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff Police Department is asking the assistance of the public to identify a suspect who broke into Fry’s Pharmacy.

The break-in occurred on December 21, 2014, at the Fry’s Pharmacy, located at 201 N. Switzer Canyon Drive, between the hours of 6pm and midnight.

The suspect attempted to break into the safe; however, he was unsuccessful. The suspect did steal some over the counter drugs as well as some prescription medications.

All suspects should be considered dangerous and should not be confronted. Contact the police if you see the person or if you have information.

Chance of showers to Sunday

The National Weather Service is predicting a chance of showers starting tomorrow for Williams and Flagstaff.

The two cities share approximately the same weather pattern with a 10 percent chance of showers Wednesday after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 58. South wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. There is a 10 percent chance of showers before 11pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. South southwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming east southeast in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

The chance of showers continues with a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after Thursday 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 30%. At night a 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Friday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52 and a low around 30 at night. Saturday is about the same with a high near 58 and a low around 31.

Sunday will be Sunny, with a high near 61 and a low around 34.

Ash Fork should be partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Southeast wind 12 to 17 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mphWednesday Night. There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. through Thursday night. The expected high near 61.

Forest Service Issues Decision on Historic Effort to Restore Forests on a Half Million Acres

FLAGSTAFF — On Friday April 17 the Forest Service reached the next milestone in the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) when Coconino National Forest Supervisor Earl Stewart and Kaibab National Forest Supervisor Mike Williams signed the final decision.  It results in accelerated forest restoration on more than a half million acres of national forests and grasslands.

Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell lauded the decision. “This is exceptional work of Forest Service employees and stakeholders who joined together to support this historic endeavor,” he said. “This restoration work will contribute significantly to our efforts to sustain healthy, resilient landscapes.  Support from these stakeholder groups will ensure we maintain this momentum for the long haul. That’s what it will take to make a difference.”

This achievement is the result of four national forests and more than 30 stakeholder groups joining together over five years to work on the largest landscape-scale restoration project ever analyzed in Forest Service history.   4FRI builds on many years of collaboration, research, and action since the mid-1990s. Over the past five years, the Forest Service has progressed toward accelerating restoration by implementing projects within the 4FRI landscape, using previous NEPA analyses. Progress continues with this final Record of Decision. It approves various restoration activities on over 586,000 acres of the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests. These activities include thinning; prescribed burning; watershed and road maintenance; grassland, spring, and stream channel restoration; and habitat improvements.

Five ADOT projects start April 20

ARIZONA — ADOT reminds travelers that five projects are scheduled to start Monday, April 20 around our area.

1. Maintenance work on Milton Road (SR 89A) under Santa Fe Railroad Bridge in Flagstaff April 20

Travelers heading through Flagstaff need to allow for extra travel time Monday, April 20, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. as ADOT crews perform maintenance operations under the Santa Fe Railroad Bridge on Milton Road (SR 89A). One lane of travel will be closed in each direction during the scheduled work. Drivers are asked to allow for extra travel time to reach their destinations and use caution while maintenance is performed in the area.

2. Overnight dirt haul on SR 89 between Prescott and Chino Valley continues

Traffic on State Route 89 between Prescott and Chino Valley (mileposts 320 to 325) will be required to stop intermittently, weather permitting, for the next three weeks to allow trucks to safely cross the highway.

The hauling operation will resume on Monday, April 20 and continue through Friday, May 8.

Overnight work hours are Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night and intermittent closures are expected for dirt hauling. Drivers can expect overnight delays of up to 10 minutes for the next three weeks .

Upon completion of the $17 million project, ADOT will expand the two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided highway along a five-mile segment of SR 89 (mileposts 320-325) between Road 4 South in Chino Valley and Deep Well Ranch Road in Prescott, just north of the SR 89/SR 89A junction. The project is expected to be complete by August.

3. Lane restrictions overnight on Interstate 17 for bridge work

Work will begin on Monday, April 20 at the McGuireville traffic interchange

PRESCOTT: Overnight bridge work will begin on a two-mile segment of Interstate 17 at the McGuireville traffic interchange (mileposts 292 to 294) on Monday, April 20 and continue through Friday, May 29.

Crews are working on the McGuireville underpass overnight and drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions in both directions and a 12-foot width restriction during work hours of 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day.

This $210,000 project consists of bridge work on the McGuireville underpass.

4. Work continues on I-17 near the McGuireville Rest Area

Work will continue next week at the McGuireville rest area on Interstate 17 approximately two miles south of the State Route 179 junction (mileposts 294 to 299).

Drivers can expect a single lane restriction in both directions Monday, April 20 through Thursday, April 23 between 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Minimal delays expected.

5. Paving work continues next week on US 93 at Wickenburg Ranch

Motorists traveling along US 93 north of Wickenburg should allow extra travel time next week as crews continue with final paving on the new roundabout at the Wickenburg Ranch entrance.

Work hours are Monday, April 20 through Wednesday, April 22 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Drivers can expect intermittent single-lane restrictions on US 93 and delays of up to 15 minutes during work hours. Flaggers will direct traffic in alternating directions using the single lane that is open.

Southbound drivers on State Route 89 at the US 93 junction need to be aware of stopped traffic as a result of the scheduled paving work.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
