Williams Justice Center holds Law Day event

640-LawDay05-07-01WILLIAMS — All of the law enforcement agencies of the State represented themselves, yesterday, in gathering to celebrate Law Day.

Law Day is May 1. Justice Robert Krombeen explained that several events were being held in Flagstaff, so he decided to hold the Williams event yesterday.

Representatives were available for questions from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff’s Department, Arizona Game and Fish, and Williams Police Department.

The Coconino County Sheriff set up a display for the Coconino Emergency Response Team. The Law Enforcement agencies also brought in a few of the vehicles they use in the performance of their duties including the DPS helicopter.

The idea of Law Day was originally proposed by the American Bar Association in 1957. In 1958 on May 1, President Dwight D. Eisenhower made a proclamation declaring May 1 of that year as Law Day to honor the role of law in the creation of the United States. Congress created the the observance of the date annually in 1961.

Forest Service and local communities open Moonset Pit

WILLIAMS — The Kaibab National Forest, in cooperation with the communities of Parks and Sherwood Forest Estates, is providing the public with access to a cinder pit on Forest Service land on specific Saturdays from May through September in order to encourage local residents to create defensible space around their homes.

Moonset Pit is located just west of the Parks community on a dirt road east of Spitz Springs on the north side of old Route 66. On the following Saturdays, the pit will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the disposal of natural, woody debris such as tree limbs and pine needles:

May 9, 23, June 13, 27, July 11, 25, August 8, 22, September 12 and Sept. 26

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of this community service in order to make their private property more defensible against the threat of wildland fire,” said James Pettit, fire management officer for the Williams Ranger District. “We work with our partners to provide this opportunity each year because a little planning and preparation can make a big difference to community safety. Neighbors are linked by wildfire risk. If one home is inadequately prepared, the risk to the whole neighborhood increases.”

Only natural forest debris will be accepted at Moonset Pit. No garbage, building materials, lumber or other items will be allowed. Items should not be bagged.

This annual service is offered by the Kaibab National Forest and the communities of Parks and Sherwood Forest Estates in coordination with the Rural Communities Fuels Management Partnership.

For more information or to volunteer to staff Moonset Pit on open dates, contact Anne Dudley at (928) 635-0417 or Joanie Raetzel at (928) 635-0059.

Anna’s Grand Canyon Cafe prepares Mother’s Day present

640_092446WILLIAMS — If you are looking for someplace to take Mom this Sunday, Anna at the Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe in the Red Garter Inn has prepared a musical present.

The Coffee and Cafe will present their second musical guest on the pet-friendly patio this Sunday, May 10. Daniel H. Volkart Facebook will perform beginning at 10:30.

If you are looking for presents for Mom, you might want to check out Old Trail’s True Value Hardware on Airport Road. She could probably use that rechargeable, reversible drill or new power mower.

Orrr…. Maybe you might want to consider an outdoor table set so she can enjoy the summer. How about a barbeque grill so that she can enjoy Mother’s day every Saturday or Sunday when you do the cooking? Maybe you could replace that shower head with a massage unit. With water rates rising soon, it might be time to replace that leaky water faucet for her.

If you have these or any other home improvement plans that she might have mentioned, check out True Value. They speak hardware.
