Chance of showers to Sunday

The National Weather Service is predicting a chance of showers starting tomorrow for Williams and Flagstaff.

The two cities share approximately the same weather pattern with a 10 percent chance of showers Wednesday after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 58. South wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. There is a 10 percent chance of showers before 11pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. South southwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming east southeast in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

The chance of showers continues with a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after Thursday 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 30%. At night a 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Friday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52 and a low around 30 at night. Saturday is about the same with a high near 58 and a low around 31.

Sunday will be Sunny, with a high near 61 and a low around 34.

Ash Fork should be partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Southeast wind 12 to 17 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mphWednesday Night. There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. through Thursday night. The expected high near 61.

There is a chance of showers Friday through the night with a high near 60 and a low around 34. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday. Mostly sunny, with a high near 66 and a low around 36. Sunday is expected to be Sunny, with a high near 69 and a low of 36 at night.

Forest Service Issues Decision on Historic Effort to Restore Forests on a Half Million Acres

FLAGSTAFF — On Friday April 17 the Forest Service reached the next milestone in the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) when Coconino National Forest Supervisor Earl Stewart and Kaibab National Forest Supervisor Mike Williams signed the final decision.  It results in accelerated forest restoration on more than a half million acres of national forests and grasslands.

Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell lauded the decision. “This is exceptional work of Forest Service employees and stakeholders who joined together to support this historic endeavor,” he said. “This restoration work will contribute significantly to our efforts to sustain healthy, resilient landscapes.  Support from these stakeholder groups will ensure we maintain this momentum for the long haul. That’s what it will take to make a difference.”

This achievement is the result of four national forests and more than 30 stakeholder groups joining together over five years to work on the largest landscape-scale restoration project ever analyzed in Forest Service history.   4FRI builds on many years of collaboration, research, and action since the mid-1990s. Over the past five years, the Forest Service has progressed toward accelerating restoration by implementing projects within the 4FRI landscape, using previous NEPA analyses. Progress continues with this final Record of Decision. It approves various restoration activities on over 586,000 acres of the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests. These activities include thinning; prescribed burning; watershed and road maintenance; grassland, spring, and stream channel restoration; and habitat improvements.

Five ADOT projects start April 20

ARIZONA — ADOT reminds travelers that five projects are scheduled to start Monday, April 20 around our area.

1. Maintenance work on Milton Road (SR 89A) under Santa Fe Railroad Bridge in Flagstaff April 20

Travelers heading through Flagstaff need to allow for extra travel time Monday, April 20, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. as ADOT crews perform maintenance operations under the Santa Fe Railroad Bridge on Milton Road (SR 89A). One lane of travel will be closed in each direction during the scheduled work. Drivers are asked to allow for extra travel time to reach their destinations and use caution while maintenance is performed in the area.

2. Overnight dirt haul on SR 89 between Prescott and Chino Valley continues

Traffic on State Route 89 between Prescott and Chino Valley (mileposts 320 to 325) will be required to stop intermittently, weather permitting, for the next three weeks to allow trucks to safely cross the highway.

The hauling operation will resume on Monday, April 20 and continue through Friday, May 8.

Overnight work hours are Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night and intermittent closures are expected for dirt hauling. Drivers can expect overnight delays of up to 10 minutes for the next three weeks .

Upon completion of the $17 million project, ADOT will expand the two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided highway along a five-mile segment of SR 89 (mileposts 320-325) between Road 4 South in Chino Valley and Deep Well Ranch Road in Prescott, just north of the SR 89/SR 89A junction. The project is expected to be complete by August.

3. Lane restrictions overnight on Interstate 17 for bridge work

Work will begin on Monday, April 20 at the McGuireville traffic interchange

PRESCOTT: Overnight bridge work will begin on a two-mile segment of Interstate 17 at the McGuireville traffic interchange (mileposts 292 to 294) on Monday, April 20 and continue through Friday, May 29.

Crews are working on the McGuireville underpass overnight and drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions in both directions and a 12-foot width restriction during work hours of 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day.

This $210,000 project consists of bridge work on the McGuireville underpass.

4. Work continues on I-17 near the McGuireville Rest Area

Work will continue next week at the McGuireville rest area on Interstate 17 approximately two miles south of the State Route 179 junction (mileposts 294 to 299).

Drivers can expect a single lane restriction in both directions Monday, April 20 through Thursday, April 23 between 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Minimal delays expected.

5. Paving work continues next week on US 93 at Wickenburg Ranch

Motorists traveling along US 93 north of Wickenburg should allow extra travel time next week as crews continue with final paving on the new roundabout at the Wickenburg Ranch entrance.

Work hours are Monday, April 20 through Wednesday, April 22 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Drivers can expect intermittent single-lane restrictions on US 93 and delays of up to 15 minutes during work hours. Flaggers will direct traffic in alternating directions using the single lane that is open.

Southbound drivers on State Route 89 at the US 93 junction need to be aware of stopped traffic as a result of the scheduled paving work.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Local Attorneys Given the Opportunity to Advertise Services in Detention Facility

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has developed a unique program by which attorneys are given the opportunity to advertise their services at the Coconino County Detention Facility.

Attorneys who choose to invest in this advertising will be able to reach out to individuals who may be in need of legal services. At the same time, an advertising purchase will assist in funding important programs in the Coconino County Detention Facility to include the Inmate Welfare Fund.

The cost of advertisement displayed in a 14” x 11” space in the detention lobby is $5,000 per year. This works out to a little more than $400 per month which is far cheaper than many other forms of advertising. The cost includes the cost of printing a color poster of personalized advertisement and the acrylic display frame with a holder for business cards.

The advertisements in the lobby can assist individuals coming into the jail lobby in connecting with legal assistance. All moneys generated from renting an advertisement space will go to the Inmate Welfare Fund which supports important programs such as Exodus (our in-custody drug and alcohol treatment program), re-entry programs, and other services that directly benefit our inmate population.

Prescribed burns planned this week

FLAGSTAFF — Fire managers are planning three prescribed burns this week in areas near Lake Mary Road, Luke Mountain and Mormon Lake basin.

Mountainaire Project: Planned ignition will be Wednesday (April 15) if conditions are suitable for burning. This burn includes approximately 550 acres along the south side of Lake Mary Road just one to two miles east of Pulliam Airport. Smoke is expected to disperse to the southeast and will be visible to those in the Flagstaff area.

Rocky Project: Planned ignition will be Thursday (April 16) or Friday (April 17), depending on weather conditions. The burn area includes 385 acres in an area near Luke Mountain that is located about 7 miles south of Munds Park on the east side of Interstate 17. Smoke is expected to disperse to the northeast away from I-17, but smoke may drift back towards the interstate during evening hours.

Mormon Lake Basin Project: Planned ignition will be Thursday (April 16) or Friday (April 17), depending on weather conditions. The burn area includes 1,000 acres in an area just west of the Village of Mormon Lake off Forest Road 219. Smoke is expected to disperse to the northeast, but settle in to the Mormon Lake area and may impact the community around Mormon Lake.

Flagstaff Police respond to Marshall Elementary School threatening call

flagstaff-policeFLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff were dispatched to Marshall Elementary School (850 N. Bonito) at about 1 p.m. today in regards to a threats call. Staff at Marshall Elementary School received a computer generated call which stated, “I am in the school and I want to kill 100’s of children.” This computer generated call was repeated several times.

Marshall Elementary School Principal John Coe initiated a lock down of the school and communicated to the Police Department as well as the surrounding schools.

Officers responded immediately to the area in conjunction with Administrative Staff from Flagstaff Unified School District. Officers conducted a room by room search of the building, including the playground and surrounding residential area with negative contact with any suspicious armed persons.

The Flagstaff Police Department are currently investigating. Last month police responded to Thomas Elementary school due to a threatened suicide.

All the women and men of the communication center at the Flagstaff Police Department/Coconino County Sheriff’s Office who utilize telephones, radios, computers and technical skills to provide support to Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services and other governmental field personnel are being celebrated the week of April 12-18th. Our dispatcher’s work 24/7, 365 days a week to assure that officers have the information they need as first responders.

Each year, the second week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as Public Safety Telecommunicators. In 1991, Congress proclaimed it as a national recognized week of recognition.

The Flagstaff Police Department will celebrate this year’s Telecommunicators Week – April 12-18 in honor of their dedicated dispatchers who handle several thousand wireless 9-1-1 calls each month within Northern Arizona. The week will be filled with various activities including Mayor Nabors making a proclamation on Tuesday, 4-14-2015.

When you dial 9-1-1 on your cellular phone in Northern Arizona a dispatcher answers the call. Please know where you are and stay on the line so they can help get the assistance you need.

Local weather shows chance of snow and rain

WILLIAMS — Weather today is warm with a high of 65 expected and southwest winds from 25 to 28 mph with gusts up to 44. Tomorrow a high of 53 is expected with 14 to 20 mph winds from the north with gusts up to 26.

There is a chance of snow tomorrow after midnight and Thursday morning with rain showers at night and Friday morning. Chance of precipitation is 10%.

Flagstaff weather is about the same with more chance of precipitation through Friday morning.

For the free weekend at the Grand Canyon, Saturday and Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs around 65 and lows around the mid-30s.
