New bridge at Hell Canyon on SR 89 opens Thursday night

The new bridge at Hell Canyon on State Route 89 at milepost 345 will open to traffic on Thursday (June 23) by midnight. Minimal impacts are expected.

For the past year, crews have been working on a new $14.4 million improvement project which included the construction a new four-span steel-plate girder bridge to the east of the existing bridge. The removal of the existing three-span steel deck truss bridge is expected to occur in mid-July.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zones with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Traffic shift scheduled tomorrow on SR 89 at Perkinsville in Chino Valley, weather permitting

Crews are scheduled to move traffic tomorrow (May 18) on State Route 89 at Perkinsville Road back to the west side of the highway (weather permitting) in order to continue building the new roundabout.

Minor delays are expected between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. as crews restripe the roadway and adjust the traffic control. Drivers will be in the new configuration for approximately four weeks.

Drivers may have minimal impacts during work hours and ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

This $1.5 million project consists of a new roundabout at the intersection of SR 89 and Perkinsville Road between mileposts 328 and 329. Additional work includes removal and replacement of existing pavement, drainage improvements, new pavement markings and lighting.

This project is expected to be complete by September.

REMINDER: SR 89 at Hell Canyon will be closed tomorrow night

CHINO VALLEY — The closure of State Route 89 at the Hell Canyon Bridge (milepost 346) has been scheduled for tomorrow night Friday (May 13) to accommodate concrete work on the new bridge, between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Drivers traveling on SR 89 Friday night into Saturday morning need to plan ahead as the road will be closed in both directions. Law enforcement will be on site to assist with the road closure.

As preparations take place leading up to the closure, crews will have SR 89 narrowed to one lane through the work zone from 5:30 p.m. on Friday night to 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Minimal delays are expected.

The next milestone for the bridge replacement project will be to open the new bridge to two-way traffic in mid-June. The project is expected to be complete by late summer.

Intermittent closures scheduled for bridge work on SR 89 at Hell Canyon

Crews are expected to work on the bridge structure on State Route 89 at Hell Canyon (mileposts 345 to 346) that will require intermittent closures of up to 10 minutes at a time starting on Tuesday (April 12) through Thursday (April 14) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Traffic will be guided through the work zone with flaggers as SR 89 will be reduced to one lane on the bridge.

New roundabout on SR 89 at Perkinsville Road takes shape

CHINO VALLEY — Over the past two months, crews with the Arizona Department of Transportation have been diligently working on construction of a new roundabout on State Route 89 at Perkinsville Road in Chino Valley.

In order to keep progress moving, crews will switch traffic over to the east side of the roundabout (weather permitted) on Friday (April 8) between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drivers will remain in the new traffic shift for the next four weeks.

As a result of the traffic shift, drivers who wish to access Perkinsville Road on the west side of SR 89 will have to use the dedicated detour as the road will be closed to through traffic. Perkinsville Road (west side) will be open on the weekends and holidays but closed during work hours between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Department of Transportation crews will be testing the newly installed overhead electronic message signs on Milton Road (SR 89A), between University and Forest Meadows in Flagstaff. This work will require restrictions for southbound travel on Milton (SR 89A) during nighttime hours, Wednesday (April 6) from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Please observe reduced speeds and exercise caution while traveling through the work zone.

State Route 89A improvement project beginning soon

FLAGSTAFF — Contractor crews began surveying on SR 89A today (March 23) in preparation for improvements to SR 89A between the Vista Point Overlook and the JW Powell Boulevard intersection (PDF).

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with ADOT and the United States Forest Service, will widen and rehabilitate SR 89A in the project area, increasing shoulder width, adding new passing lanes and enhancing clear zones to improve safety and traffic operations.

Access through SR 89A will not be restricted during surveying, however drivers are asked to slow down and watch for workers in the area. Project-related traffic restrictions may be anticipated later in the Spring and Summer months as construction progresses. Please stay tuned for future updates on the SR 89A widening project.

FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Department of Transportation crews will continue installation work on new overhead electronic message signs on Milton Road (SR 89A), between University Drive and Forest Meadows and on I-40 Westbound at MP 197 near Butler Avenue in Flagstaff.

Tuesday through Wednesday, southbound travel on Milton (SR 89A) (between University Dr and Forest Meadows) will be restricted to one lane to accommodate crews working on the west side of the roadway. Work will take place during evening hours from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Thursday (March 10), travel on I-40 Westbound (near Butler Avenue) will have short temporary closures to accommodate installation of the overhead message sign; work will take place from 10 p.m. to 4. a.m.

Bridge work scheduled on SR 89 at Hell Canyon next week

Drivers traveling on State Route 89 at Hell Canyon Bridge (milepost 345) starting tomorrow (March 3) should expect intermittent delays of up to 30 minutes at a time as crews begin placing girders on the new bridge over Hell Canyon. Traffic will be stopped in both directions approaching the project.

Impacts for up to 30 minutes at a time are expected between 10 and 11 a.m. and again from noon and 1 p.m. The installation of the girders will be done by very large cranes, positioned in the bottom of the canyon, that need to be flown over the existing bridge causing the temporary closures.

In addition to the delays tomorrow, crews will again place girders next week, Tuesday through Friday (March 8 through 11) between 10 and 11 a.m. and again from noon to 1 p.m.
