AZDPS uses police grappler bumper to stop street racing suspects

MESA — On Saturday, June 10, 2023, Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers and fellow Street Racing Task Force partners responded to reports of vehicles involved in intersection takeovers throughout the Valley.During an incident at an intersection in Mesa, one of the involved drivers struck a pedestrian participant and then fled the scene. With assistance from task force partners – including the City of Mesa Police Department, Phoenix Police Department and Tempe Police Department – the suspect vehicle was located and an AZDPS sergeant successfully deployed the Grappler Police Bumper, netting one of the vehicle’s rear tires and bringing it to a safe stop.

The driver and passenger, both 17-year-old males, were detained and cited for street racing and the vehicle was impounded.

Street racing and intersection takeovers not only pose a significant disruption for other motorists, but they also endanger the lives of participants, pedestrians, and everyone on the road. Anyone caught engaging in street racing may face penalties including a 20-day vehicle impound, fines, community restitution, and the possibility of jail time for second and subsequent offenses.

AZDPS would like to thank our partner agencies for their continued efforts and support, which are critical in deterring and stopping this criminal activity.

Police stand-off ends in self-inflicted gunshot wound

WILLIAMS – A tense police stand off began at approximately noon today on Route 66 by Safeway ending six-an-a-half hours later with the armed suspect shooting himself in the leg. We have not received confirmation of the name of the suspect or what sparked the afternoon stand off.

We have heard that another male and female suspect were in the vehicle and surrendered at the beginning of the incident.

During the stand off, the suspect indicated that he wanted his mother to call an attorney to retain him or he would take his life. Later, the suspect arranged a phone call with the Coconino County Sheriff’s office commander because he no longer wanted to talk to the on scene negotiator.

At approximately 6:32 p.m., the suspect shot himself in the leg and the Williams Police Department dispatched a Lifeline ambulance that was standing by during the incident. No officers were injured or exchange fire.

No other details are known. We have a possible name of the suspect but are awaiting confirmation from the police.

Law Enforcement Response to Barricaded Subject – Williams

WILLIAMS, ARIZONA – Coconino County Sheriff’s Office along with Williams Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Northern Arizona Tactical Team are currently on scene of an armed subject, barricaded inside his vehicle in the area of the Safeway grocery store in Williams, Arizona. At this time, no shots have been fired. There are no reports of injuries. A perimeter has been established and negotiations with the person are ongoing.

Law enforcement are asking that the public avoid the area. We will provide further information as it becomes available.

Coconino Sheriff’s Office Responds to Body Below Bridge Near Munds Park

FLAGSTAFF — On April 27 at 12:29 a.m., Coconino County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a request from the Arizona Department of Public Safety to a bridge along Interstate 17 south of Munds Park where a body had been found deceased. The victim was located approximately 70 feet below the bridge.

A Department of Public Safety Officer conducted a check of a vehicle at that location believing it to be broken down. As he checked the area the Officer observed what he believed to be a body below the bridge.

The Pinewood Fire Department responded to the area and assisted CCSO Search and Rescue in the recovery of the body. The Victim is believed to be out of the Phoenix area. The Case is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Carin Lamprakes and Kim McGowan found

FLAGSTAFF – The Attempt to Locate for the two women who were reported as missing persons by their families Carin Lamprakes and Kim McGowan has been cancelled. An Arizona Department of Public Safety Trooper came in contact with the two women in the greater Phoenix area. Nothing was found to be suspicious or to lead officers to believe they were endangered. The families of the women have been notified. The women have asked that their privacy be respected. Thank you to the public for your assistance in attempting to locate these women so that their welfare could be confirmed. They are no longer listed as missing persons.
