Inmate Death at Coconino County Detention Facility

FLAGSTAFF – Clinton Lee Davis, age 49 of Idaho, was discovered in his cell on Wednesday evening and was subsequently determined to be deceased as the result of suicide by hanging.

Mr. Davis has been an inmate at the Coconino County Detention Facility since April, 13 2014 when he was booked by Page Police Department for multiple criminal offenses to include Burglaries, Thefts, Criminal Damage and Prohibited Weapons Possession. Mr. Davis also was being held on an out of state warrant for original offenses of Burglaries and Thefts.

Prior to his death Mr. Davis was assigned to a two person cell in a housing unit. The housing unit has a common day use area that inmates are allowed to use. At approximately 4:42 pm Detention Officers were alerted by inmates assigned to the housing unit that Mr. Davis appeared to be hanging from a ladder attached to a two person bunk bed. Detention Officers immediately responded and placed him on the floor at which point they began life saving efforts to include CPR. A Registered Nurse assigned to the facility also responded with an AED device.

Detention Officers and the nurse continued to administer lifesaving efforts until the arrival of Guardian Medical personnel who assumed medical care of Mr. Davis. He did not respond to life saving efforts and was pronounced deceased. Mr. Davis was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office and Sheriff’s personnel notified his next of kin.

At this point in the investigation no foul play is suspected and it appears that Mr. Davis died of a self-inflected injury.

Plane Crash in Northern Arizona Claims Two Lives

Photo courtesy of the Coconino County SheriffCOCONINO COUNTY – A missing aircraft crashed in a remote area of the Navajo Indian Reservation in the northeast part of Coconino County. Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue and Detectives along with Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger Helicopter responded to the scene and confirmed two people were deceased.

The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) had been investigating the report of an overdue aircraft with two males aboard destined for South Carolina. The AFRCC found the aircraft had departed Las Vegas, NV sometime Friday June 20, 2014, landed in Page, AZ and then departed Page at 1:30 pm Arizona time. The pilot had not filed a flight plan. The AFRCC found the last cell phone contact with the pilot’s phone was off a tower at Navajo Mountain shortly after the take- off from Page. The AFRCC then contact the Civil Air Patrol Wings from several states, who launched a multi-state search Sunday morning June 21, 2014.

Four Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Wings were involved in the search across four states, including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. A ground search team was deployed to Tuba City from Arizona, and a Communications Team from Colorado was deployed to Page. At around 1:40 pm Arizona time, the Arizona Wing of the CAP located from the air the wreckage of a plane in a canyon. Wreckage matching the description of the missing aircraft was at the bottom of a remote desert area called Peach Canyon.

Sheriff’s detectives were transported to the scene by the Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger Helicopter based out of Flagstaff. Due to the remote nature of the canyon, access to the wreckage could only be made by helicopter. The bodies of the deceased were removed and transported to the medical examiner’s office in Flagstaff.

While positive identification of the victims will be made by the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, the pilot is believed to be 47 year old Charles Trotter of Liberty, SC and the passenger is believed to be 15 year old Dakota Jacks from Pickens, SC. Dakota is reported to be a friend of the pilot’s family. The cause of the crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Coconino County Sheriff seeking information on missing juvenile

COCONINO COUNTY – The Coconino County Sheriff’s department is seeking information on a possible runaway whose father believes may be in the Phoenix area.

Kimberly Dawn Anderson is a 17-year-old white female with blonde hair and blue eyes. She is 5-foot tall and weighs 95-pounds.

The Sheriff’s department describes her as a possible runaway who was last seen on Wednesday at approximately 6 pm. She was last seen wearing a green fleece jacket and blue jeans. It is reported that she has run away in the past, but returned the next day.

Sheriff’s Deputies investigate murder of Flagstaff Man

FLAGSTAFF – Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives are investigating the murder of 56 year-old David Allen Christine of Flagstaff, AZ. Mr. Christine’s body was located by a passing motorist near Star School located on Leupp Road.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at about 5:30 a.m. the Flagstaff Police Department/Coconino County Sheriff’s 911 Dispatch Center received a call from a motorist who was traveling on Leupp Road (Forrest Service 505). According to the reporting party, he was in the area located just east of Star School when he observed what he believed to be a body off of the roadway in the dirt.

Deputies arrived to find a Guardian Medical Transport team was already on scene. The subject was found to be deceased. During the initial investigation a detective who was at the scene observed indications of foul play. After the scene was processed and photographed, the victim was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.

There were no forms of identification on the victim, and detectives received information causing them to believe the individual frequented several homeless shelters in Flagstaff. Investigators interviewed multiple clients of several homeless centers in Flagstaff in an attempt to identify the victim but met with no results.

Fingerprints were taken from the deceased and with the assistance of the United States Marshals Office the prints were submitted to a federal forensic laboratory that provides results in a short period of time. The results of the fingerprint analysis identified the body to be that of 56 year-old David Allen Christine of Flagstaff. Subsequently Flagstaff Police Officers located a white Plymouth mini-van registered to the victim parked outside a local motel.

The victim is described as a white male, 56 years of age, 5’11” in height, weighing approximately 135 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing black Levi pants, black shoes, a beige
t-shirt, and a blue Columbia polar fleece jacket.

Manner of death will be determined during the examination conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Single Vehicle Roll-Over on Snowbowl Road Resulting in Serious Injury

DSCN2003FLAGSTAFF – A single-vehicle accident occurred on Wednesday resulting in a serious injury on Snowbowl road.

At approximately 4:58 pm the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a traffic collision on Snowbowl Road in the area of mile post 3.4. Upon arrival Deputies found a Freightliner flatbed utility truck rolled over.

The investigation of Deputies revealed that the truck was owned by Allison Transmission from Indiana, and was being driven to test transmissions installed in commercial vehicles. Both occupants of the vehicle were also from Indiana. One occupant was trapped in the cab and required extrication by Summit Fire District responders.

The 23 year old driver and the 21 year old passenger were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Medical Transport. Forest Service and Arizona Department of Public Safety also assisted in the response to this incident.

The passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries and the driver is in critical condition. No cargo was being carried by the truck. Investigation of the roll-over event is ongoing with the assistance of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Fire Damages Residential Structure and two Travel Trailers

WILLIAMS – Coconino County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating a fire that damaged a residential structure and two travel trailers on a lot located near Sycamore Canyon Drive in Pioneer Estates, which is a residential area located south of Parks, Arizona.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at approximately 1:20 pm Sheriff’s Deputies and Ponderosa Fire District Firefighters responded to the report of a structural and wild land fire. The fire was quickly contained. However, three structures, including a house and two travel trailers, were lost. Residents had self-evacuated; no residents or fire fighters were injured.

A Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer responded and assisted with the investigation. The fire burned approximately 0.6 of an acre of national forest land. It is unknown at this time whether the cause of the fire was intentional or accidental, but indications are that the fire was human caused.

Investigators are considering the possibility that the fire was intentionally started. During a fire on the same property approximately one month ago, a travel trailer was destroyed. Deputies assigned to the Williams/Grand Canyon Patrol District and Detectives are continuing this investigation.

Inmate found dead from possible suicide

Flagstaff – On Sunday, March 30, 2014 at about 2:11 AM Coconino County Detention Facility Officers while conducting scheduled inmate security and welfare checks found an inmate unresponsive in his cell. Detention Officers quickly began lifesaving measures, to include CPR, until paramedics arrived on scene and took over lifesaving efforts. The inmate was pronounced deceased at about 2:50 AM. The cause of death is currently under investigation but appears to be a suicide. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials are currently attempting to notify next of kin.

Community Meeting on Awareness & Prevention of Serious Injury and Fatality Collisions on Camp Townsend/Winona Road

FLAGSTAFF – The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is facilitating a meeting to discuss motor vehicle collisions resulting in injuries and fatalities that have occurred on Camp Townsend/Winona Road. The meeting will be held at the Summit Fire District Station Number 31 located at 6425 N. Cosnino Road in Flagstaff on Thursday, March 27, 2014 beginning at 6:00 pm.

During the years of 2008 to February 4, 2014 Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives have investigated 49 motor vehicle collisions resulting in injuries and five collisions that have resulted in fatalities on Camp Townsend/Winona Road. Investigations have revealed that a large number of the collisions are the result of driver error with the most predominant violations of “Speed in Excess Of the Posted Limit” and “Failure to Control Motor Vehicle.”

Representatives of the Sheriff’s Office and the Coconino County Public Works Engineering Department will present information to the community and discuss possible solution to include increased enforcement of traffic violations on Camp/Townsend Winona Road with emphasis on violations that may result in serious injury and fatality collisions. Representatives of the Public Works Department will discuss the possibility of additional signage.

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking information and suggestions from the public that create a collaborative effort to reduce collisions in the area. We cordially invite you to join the Sheriff’s Office in a partnership of trust and shared responsibility with the ultimate objective of increasing motoring-safety on Camp Townsend Winona Road and throughout our community.

Multiple Residential Burglaries in Forest Lakes Area

FLAGSTAFF – Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives are investigating a series of five residential burglaries that were reported during the dates of February 24, 2014 through March 13, 2014. The burglaries have occurred in the Mule Springs area located south of Highway 260 and in the Mineral Loop area north of Highway 260. Residential structures and outbuildings have been targeted in the burglaries.

Method of entry may include both blunt force entry through exterior doors and entry through exterior doors in which the locks have been picked. The suspect or suspects may be targeting construction tools including power tools, air compressors and chain saws. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the burglaries that have occurred in the Forest Lakes area may be related to numerous burglaries that have occurred in the Heber area that are under investigation by the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office & Taverna Greek Grill Sponsor Tip-A-Cop Fundraiser for Special Olympics on Feb 18

Flagstaff – Join the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Taverna Greek Grill, 420 S Woodland Blvd in Flagstaff, to raise funds for Northern Arizona Special Olympics athletes.  The Tip-A-Cop event will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014.  All day, 15% of sales will go toward AZ Special Olympics.  From 5 pm – 9 pm Sheriff’s Office employees will be assisting the waiters and helping to serve you.  Officers will be accepting any tax deductible charitable donations you wish to give to help support local AZ Special Olympics athletes.

Special Olympic events were created for children and adults with intellectual disabilities to explore their abilities in a variety of sports and physical activities.  The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a branch of Special Olympics that was founded by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in the 1980’s.  LETR is committed not only to raising funds for Special Olympics Athletes, but also to sharing awareness and promoting opportunities for the athletes.  In Arizona, Special Olympics offers 22 sporting events, 170 programs and five statewide competitions for over 13,000 athletes each year.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run earned its name because law enforcement personnel run, walk, and bicycle carrying the Special Olympics Torch to its destination for local, state, and worldwide Special Olympics Games.  As such, law enforcement has become the “Guardian of the Flame” for Special Olympics.  Later this spring, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office will again be among the law enforcement agencies that guard the Flame of Hope as it journeys through our state and makes its way to the summer state games in Phoenix, AZ.

In preparation for those games and to help raise funds for our local athletes to train and participate in the sporting events, we are kicking off 2014 with Tip-A-Cop at Taverna Greek Grill in Flagstaff.  We also will be working with community partners throughout Coconino County for additional Tip-A-Cop events and other fundraising opportunities as we help athletes realize their goals and promote community awareness for Special Olympics.  Watch for these and other events on our Facebook page CoconinoSO and our Twitter account CoconinoSheriff:
