Police investigate homicide in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF –- On March 20th, 2022, at approximately 1:00 AM, Police responded to 2 N. Leroux, Collins Irish Bar for a report of a large crowd physically fighting which turned into a shooting.

When they arrived, officers located a subject in the street who had been shot. The victim was later identified as 26-year-old Frankie James Jackson, of Flagstaff.

The shooter was taken into custody and identified as 26-year-old Treysean Michael Anthony Ware of Flagstaff. Witnesses indicated that an altercation between Treysean and Frankie took place outside of Collin’s where Treysean pulled a gun on Frankie and shot him twice. Frankie was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center Emergency where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Treysean has been arrested on charges of 2nd Degree Homicide, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon and drug charges. This investigation is ongoing; however we are not actively seeking any additional suspects. There were no additional injuries reported in this altercation.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

FLAGSTAFF – On January 26, 2022, at approximately 1:20 PM, an armed robbery occurred at the Mobile gas Station at 2484 E Butler Avenue. A woman, later identified as Hertecia Anderson of Cottonwood, AZ, entered the store and donned a black ski mask. She demanded the clerk’s money from the register while brandishing a handgun towards the clerks. One of the clerks was complying with the demands, and another clerk tackled her. They attempted to detain her, but she broke free and ran across the street. When police arrived, she was located and arrested at the Sinclair Truck Stop (Little America).

Upon further investigation, the handgun was later determined to be a BB gun, which had a realistic appearance. Out of concern for her safety she was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center for evaluation of a prior medical condition. The Flagstaff Police Department Criminal Investigation Division is not seeking any additional suspects at this time.

Man shot and killed near Flagstaff Walmart

FLAGSTAFF — At about 2:06 this morning, Ashley Martin entered the Walmart on South Woodlands Village Boulevard and asked employees to call the Flagstaff Police. When police arrived, Ms. Martin informed them that she had shot someone.

According to the police report, she led officers to the nearby urban trail between Walmart and Beulah Blvd. The woman told police that she and the man had been involved in an altercation that ended with the fatal shooting of the man identified as Travis Nelson.

The woman was taken to the Flagstaff Police Department for questioning. Detectives responded to the scene to investigate. Ashley Martin was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility.

Sheriff’s Office Investigates Flagstaff Police Officer Involved Shooting

FLAGSTAFF – On February 3, 2019 at approximately 9:27 a.m., two Flagstaff Police Officers were leaving The Guidance Center in Flagstaff at 2187 N. Vickey Street on an unrelated call when an individual, identified as Henry Harold Russell, 47 years old, from Boise, Idaho, confronted the officers brandishing two knives. The confrontation escalated when Russell approached an officer having the knives raised toward the officer in a threatening manner. As the officer backed away from Russell, he gave Russell commands to drop the knives. Russell charged the officer with a knife in each hand, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon striking Russell. Officers on scene provided lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. Russell was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center and was later pronounced deceased.

The officers involved in the incident were not injured in the altercation. The Flagstaff Police Department Officer who discharged his weapon is identified as Officer Tyler Romney, a 3-½ year veteran of the department. Officer Romney is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, per department policy and procedure.

The Northern Arizona Officer Involved Shooting Team responded to the scene and immediately began the investigation, with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency. Initial Investigation indicates three shots were fired by Officer Romney, striking the suspect twice.

An autopsy was conducted on February 4th and the medical examiner’s report is pending toxicology. The examination at the time of autopsy found that Russell was struck twice by gunfire, one wound in the right leg and one wound in the back.

A review of the officer’s body worn camera shows Russell was armed and aggressively charging towards Officer Romney. Romney fired, and all three shots were fired within one second. The video footage shows Russell reacted by immediately turning to his right. A shot hit Russell in the leg and another struck Russell in the back as he continued to fall to the ground. Romney ceased firing as Russell was falling to the ground.

CCSO Detectives are investigating Russell’s background. Russell was convicted in Idaho in 2005 for Sexual Abuse of a Child under 16 years old and has served time in prison multiple times. That conviction required Russell to register as a Sex Offender. Russell had not registered with local law enforcement as required by law. Russell had recently been released from the Idaho Department of Corrections on December 3rd, 2018. Russell had not requested permission to leave the state according to Idaho Department of Corrections Parole, which is a violation of his parole conditions.

Detectives have confirmed that Russell was not a patient of the Guidance Center and it is unknown why he was at that location on February 3. Investigators found Russell had stayed at Flagstaff Shelter Services on January 28th. It is still unknown exactly how long he had been in the Flagstaff area. Russell did not have any known family in Flagstaff or connections to the Flagstaff area.

Russell had no contacts with local law enforcement in and around the Flagstaff area prior to the shooting. Additional information indicated that Russell had been admitted to the Flagstaff Medical Center as suicidal and an overdose in mid-January.

The investigation is on-going and more information will be made available as the investigation continues.

CERT and Citizens Police Academy Classes scheduled for February

FLAGSTAFF – The next Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) Training will be held Wednesday, February 20 to Friday, February 22, 2019. The sessions will be held at the Law Enforcement Facility, 911 E Sawmill Rd, Flagstaff. The times will be 8 am to 5 pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 8 am – noon on Friday. Attendance is required all three days to complet the course.

Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services may not be able to meet the demand for services. Number of victims, issues with communications, and road blockages can prevent people from accessing the emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. People may need to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs.

The Citizens Police Academy is a multi-agency program sponsored by the Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Arizona University Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The program is designed to promote awareness and understanding of what local law enforcement agencies do, thus fostering a partnership of trust and shared responsibility between interested law abiding citizens and law enforcement.

The 14 week class session begins Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Program participants meet on Wednesday nights, and on a couple of Saturdays. Wednesday night classes are held at the Brent F. Cooper Auditorium located at 911 E. Sawmill Road, Flagstaff, Arizona from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participation in this program is free of charge and open to all law abiding community members who are 18 years of age and older.

Sheriff’s Office Responds to Barricaded Subject in Tuba City, AZ

TUBA CITY – At approximately 8:30 am yesterday, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received information from Navajo Police Department in Tuba City of an armed barricaded subject at the Pasture Canyon Apartments belonging to the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation.

54-year old Allen Lynch, Jr. had barricaded himself in his residence after a domestic disturbance involving a discharge of a firearm and threats to a family member. Due to the involvement of a firearm in a residential neighborhood, a number of residents were evacuated.

Navajo Police requested the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office respond because the incident involved non-native individuals making it the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office.

Over 7 hours of negotiations with the subject ensued afterwhich a robot from the Flagstaff Police Department was used to enter the residence where Mr. Lynch was located. The Tactical Team was able to secure the residence and take Mr. Lynch into custody.

Mr. Lynch was transported to the Tuba City Regional Health Care for medical evaluation and later booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility in Flagstaff under charges including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Disorderly Conduct with a Firearm, and Criminal Damage.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Navajo Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Flagstaff Police/Coconino Sheriff Tactical Team, Guardian Air based out of Tuba City, and Security Personnel from Tuba City Regional Health Care.

Vehicle Pursuit Results in Multiple Investigative Leads

Flagstaff – At approximately 3:16 am this morning, a Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Deputy engaged in a short vehicle pursuit which resulted in investigative leads in a stolen vehicle, vehicle burglaries, and drug paraphernalia.

During the early morning hours of January 10, a Coconino County Sheriff Deputy was traveling on San Francisco Street when she observed a gray Toyota Tundra traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to yield at the red light on Switzer Canyon and San Francisco. The Deputy activated emergency lights and sirens to stop the vehicle on Cedar Avenue near Flagstaff Medical Center, but the vehicle accelerated away from her and ran through another red light. The vehicle was estimated at driving at rates of up to 60 mph.

The pursuit lasted a short distance. When the driver attempted to turn at Pine Cliff Drive, the vehicle slid off the road and crashed into a utility box. Four people exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The Deputy and her canine located one of the occupants who had a valid warrant for arrest.

The Toyota Tundra was reported stolen out of Surprise, Arizona. Inside the vehicle were items that appear to be related to vehicle burglaries that took place in Flagstaff. Drug paraphernalia and a large amount of heroin also were found in the vehicle.

Arrested during this incident was 38 year-old Consuelo Almendarez of Flagstaff.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with the Flagstaff Police Department in further investigation of this incident and other possible related crimes.

Flagstaff police vehicle involved in accident during funeral procession

10-14 962FLAGSTAFF — On January 29, 2016 at approximately 11:45, a Flagstaff Police Department patrol vehicle was involved in a collision while assisting in a funeral procession traveling west on Butler from Ponderosa Parkway.

The procession was approximately 300 vehicles long and was traveling at a slow pace in the south (inside) lane of west bound Butler Avenue. One of the vehicles in the procession stopped to allow another vehicle who was traveling in the opposite direction, to either turn left or complete a U- turn. This vehicle collided with the police vehicle which was west bound in the outside lane assisting with the procession.

During the collision the air bags were deployed, and both occupants of the SUV and the police vehicle were transported for non- life threatening injuries. The collision investigation is being conducted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Walmart bomb scare results in arrest

On Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:52 a.m., Officers were called to the parking lot of Walmart at 2750 Woodlands in regards to what appeared to be some type of explosive device. When Officers arrived they located several propane tanks, an extension cord, and a battery charger.

A witness was contacted and he described two subjects in a white colored Ford Mustang who had taken the tanks out of the car. The passenger then left the parking lot and the driver left the tanks in the parking lot and drove out of the area.

Officers cordoned off the area, and requested the Bomb Squad to respond as a safety precaution. The Bomb Squad arrived and inspected the tanks and determined they were not being used as any type of explosive devices. After speaking with the witness and reviewing parking lot video, an attempt to locate was sent to surrounding officers for contact with the white Mustang.

An Officer located the Mustang and attempted to pull it over and driver did not comply. Other Officers in the area in unmarked vehicles located the car and described it as driving on the grass and driving in a reckless manner. The vehicle was monitored and was followed as it moved towards the Brannen homes area, and came to a stop after driving off the roadway and into the wooded area near the 1000 block of Dogwood. The driver ran from the vehicle and was quickly apprehended by Officers in the area.

The driver has been identified as 53 year old Berel David Stolworth of Durango Colorado. Stolworth was taken into custody and charged with Possession of Narcotic Drugs for Transport, Possession of Narcotic Drugs for Sale, Possession of Dangerous Drugs for Sale and Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement. This investigation is currently still under investigation, and further information will be forthcoming.

Flagstaff Police seek information on Circle K Robbery

FLAGSTAFF — On November 4, 2015 at approximately 10:47 p.m., Officers were called to a suspected beer theft at the Circle K at 2718 N. Steves. When officers arrived they recognized the clerk had been threatened with a knife and ordered to lie on the ground, (note first picture), while the robbers took various items from the store.

A third suspect entered the store and walked by the robbery in progress and walked over to the alcohol area and stole a 12 pack of beer, leaving the store without paying. It appeared from the video surveillance the three were working together. All three subjects fled the area in a northern direction.

The first suspect to enter the store was described as a white or Hispanic male between the ages of 20-30. He was wearing a red/black flannel shirt, grey jeans and white shoes.

The second suspect was described as either white or Hispanic between the ages of 20-30, wearing a grey flannel shirt over a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Both suspects were wearing gloves. The first suspect entered the store and then pulled his beanie (ski mask) down over his face.

The third subject is described as wearing a large winter jacket and wearing a ski mask type beanie cap which was pulled down over his face.
