Drivers on Interstate 17 should plan for nightly lane restrictions in both directions April 15-20

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan for overnight lane restrictions on Interstate 17 during the upcoming week. The restrictions will begin the evening of Monday, April 15, and end the morning of Saturday, April 20, as work continues on the I-17 Improvement Project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point.

Drivers should allow extra travel time, drive with caution, and reduce their speed around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:

Northbound Restrictions

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (left lane closed) near Rock Springs/Black Canyon City (mileposts 239-240) nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Thursday, April 18, for earthwork.
  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane closed) near Coldwater Road (mileposts 244-245) nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Thursday, April 18, for earthwork.
  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane closed) near Coldwater Road (mileposts 244-245) from 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, to 6 a.m. Friday, April 19, for earthwork.

Southbound Restrictions

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane closed) south of Sunset Point (mileposts 250-249) nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Saturday, April 20, for earthwork.
  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Bumble Bee Road and Black Canyon City (mileposts 246-240) nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Saturday, April 20, for earthwork and placement/removal of temporary concrete barriers.
  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (left lane closed) north of Table Mesa Road (mileposts 238-236) nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Saturday, April 20, for earthwork and placement of temporary concrete barriers.
  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane closed) north of New River Road (mileposts 233-232) nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning the evening of Monday, April 15, and ending the morning of Friday, April 19, for electrical work.

Overnight work on I-17 south of Camp Verde scheduled tonight

CAMP VERDE – The Arizona Department of Transportation will move concrete barrier on southbound Interstate 17 tonight, April 17 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. south of Camp Verde as part of the climbing lane project. 

 

Southbound drivers can expect a single lane restriction and northbound traffic will be guided through the project work zone with flaggers and a pilot car. 

 

Starting Monday, April 21 crews will begin the milling and paving work on I-17 through the project.  For the next two weeks, overnight work will require a single lane restriction in both directions and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel times to reach their destination.     

 

Work hours are from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and drivers can expect minimal delays. 

 

During construction, bicyclists are not permitted through the project work zone as the shoulders along I-17 are closed.   

 

This project is expected to be complete by the summer 2014. 

 

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Blasting is over, I-17 climbing lane project moves to next phase

ADOT project to ease congestion along southbound uphill stretch near Camp Verde

PHOENIX – One of the most visible projects on Interstate 17 is moving onto the final phase of construction.

Since the January 2013 start of the $11.8 million safety improvement project south of Camp Verde, the Arizona Department of Transportation has moved approximately 350,000 tons of dirt and boulders from Copper Canyon to clear a path for the construction of the first-ever climbing lane (and third travel lane) on southbound I-17.

When complete, the additional southbound lane through the final two miles to the top of Copper Canyon will make it easier for motorists to pass large trucks and slow-moving vehicles whose speed drops because of the sustained grades along this stretch of highway (mileposts 280-282), which is the primary travel route linking Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Since early 2013, motorists traveling late at night on I-17 (primarily between 11:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.) have had to plan ahead to avoid more than 70 planned one-hour closures required to safely remove the rock material from the mountainside of Copper Canyon. Those restrictions ended with the final overnight blasting closure on Feb. 18, but additional lane restrictions are anticipated in the future as crews move to pave the new lane.

Southbound I-17 climbing laneWith the blasting phase of the project completed on Copper Canyon and the project 80 percent finished, crews have already begun building the subgrade for the new pavement on the climbing lane, which will add a third travel lane for motorists to climb to the top of the steep Copper Canyon.

ADOT will start final paving operations for the project in early summer when temperatures are ideal for this type of work.

In addition to the climbing lane, ADOT is also building a two-mile-long merging lane between the State Route 260 junction and General Crook Trail traffic interchange (mileposts 285-287), which is located just before the approach to Copper Canyon. The merging lane will allow larger vehicles to gain speed before merging onto I-17 while also providing more room for passenger vehicles traveling past slower traffic.

Blasting overnight on I-17 south of Camp Verde ends next week

One-hour closure expected in both directions next week between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.

The last overnight closure for blasting on Interstate 17, south of Camp Verde, takes place Tuesday night.

I-17 will be closed in both directions between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, and 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb.19, for the final blasting operation for the climbing lane project on Interstate 17.

ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Once blasting is completed, work will then take place behind the concrete barrier currently in place along the highway, and no further full highway closures are expected.

Overnight closures on I-17 south of Camp Verde continue this week

One-hour closure scheduled this week between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.

This week crews will close Interstate 17 overnight, in both directions, between General Crook Trail and State Route 169 for up to one hour between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Thursday, Feb. 6.

The nightly closure allows work on the climbing lane project south of Camp Verde. Each night, from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., northbound I-17 will be stopped at SR 169, and southbound I-17 traffic will be stopped at General Crook Trail, until the work is completed and the roadway can be reopened.

During this construction project, bicyclists are not permitted through the project work zone at any time, as the shoulders along I-17 are closed. Bicyclists can bypass the work zone via State Route 169 for northbound riders or State Route 260 for southbound riders.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
