I Scream!

Ice cream truck back in Williams.

WILLIAMS—I did something today that I have not done in a long time. Bought an ice cream off of an old-fashioned ice cream truck in Williams.

An ice cream truck used to travel from Flagstaff to Williams, but ceased several years ago. Now Tracy Ross has filled the void after a six-month renovation and the musical sound of the ice cream truck can once again be heard. The Four Kids Ice Cream truck was introduced at the Independence Day parade in Williams. They are working out a schedule to find the best time to travel through Williams. If you have suggestions or would like to have the truck at your birthday party or special event, you can call 928-499-8339.

The truck evokes nostalgic memories of the days of kids waiting roadside to listen for the musical sound of the approaching ice cream truck. At least that is what older people tell me. I’m not old enough to have such memories.

Williams Independence Day parade takes over Route 66

WILLIAMS—Dark clouds cooled off the small City of Williams, but did not damper one of the best parades in a number of years. The American Legion Cordova Post #13 led the parade which included local groups, the 108th Army Band and—it must be an election year—politicians. Smokey made an appearance and the Williams Fire Department brought out their fire trucks.

The American Legion Cordova Post #13 carries the colors to begin the parade.

First Baptist Church movie night Saturday

WILLIAMS—The First Baptist Church at 7th and Grant is having a movie night on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. The movie night is being conducted to raise funds for a youth rafting trip later this summer.

This Saturday, July 7 is the 2008 drama The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry. The movie stars Gavin MacLeod as Jonathan Sperry, Jansen Panettiere and Robert Guillaume.

The movie includes a meal and a donation of $10 is requested. The movie is open to tourist as well as locals.

Free Swim Wednesday

WILLIAMS—The pool will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on July 4th. There is no cost for the swim.

Firemen fight fire on Sherman

UPDATE: The family dog was transported to the veterinarian clinic in Flagstaff and did survive the ordeal. The Williams Police Department reports the dog is in good condition.

WILLIAMS—After their arrival, it took less than fifteen-minutes for Williams Firefighters to reduce the blaze at 119 Sherman to a smoldering ember. No one was home at the time except the family dog.

Firefighters took on the blaze in the rental with a fire cannon and hose. They also sprayed neighboring homes to prevent the spread of the intense heat. The fire began about 9:50 a.m.

Neighbors across the street reported hearing a pop and going outside to find a black bag burning on the porch. They reported the fire to the Williams Fire Department.

After rescue, fire fighters work to comfort the family pet.

While firefighters rescued the dog, paramedics at the scene were not allowed to administer any manner of medical treatment or first aid.

“It should not take any special training to give a dog an oxygen mask,” local resident Brenda Carter complained.

The dog is alive, but his condition is unknown.

The movie includes a meal and a donation of $10 is requested. The movie is open to tourist as well as locals.

Gun show scheduled for July 28th and 29th

WILLIAMS—Arizona Collectibles and Firearms will present its third annual Williams Arizona Gun Show on Saturday the 28th from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday the 29th from 9 am to 3 pm. The show will be held at the Bob Dean Rodeo and Fair Grounds. Admission is $7 and features guns, ammunition, knives and accessories.

Candidates Sought for County’s School Boards

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Up to three seats each on school boards throughout Coconino County will be open for voters to fill on Election Day, Nov. 6.

County Superintendent of Schools Robert Kelty invites residents from throughout the County to consider serving their communities by seeking offices that help shape policies impacting our children’s future. All current terms end Dec. 31 and those elected serve four-year terms.

The following school districts will hold elections Nov. 6 to fill governing board openings:

• The Flagstaff Unified School Board will have three open positions, which are currently held by Chris Bavasi, Sarah Ells and Paul Kulpinski. A minimum of 201 nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Fredonia Moccasin Unified School Board will have two open positions. Two of the positions are currently held by Jim Goodnow and Lamar Heaton. A minimum of five nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Grand Canyon Unified School Board will have three open positions, which are currently held by Clarinda Vail, Peter Shearer and Luis Garcia. A minimum of six nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Page Unified School Board will have three open positions, which are currently held by Sandra Kidman, Martha Natonabah and William Justice. A minimum of 39 nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Williams Unified School Board will have three open positions, which are currently held by Herman Nixon, Thomas Ross and David Nenne. A minimum of 15 nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Tuba City Unified School Board will have three open positions, which are currently held by Judy Begay, Linda Honahni and Marie Wheeler. A minimum of 46 nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

• The Chevelon Butte Elementary School District #5 School Board, will have three open positions, which are currently held by Richard Eng, Linda Blosser, and Trina Cooper. A minimum of three nominating signatures must appear on a potential candidate’s petition forms and a nomination paper must be filed to seek one of these seats.

WILLIAMS—Marvelous Marv’s Private Grand Canyon Tour received a high rating from TripAdvisor®, a travel advisory web site. TripAdvisor® features reviews and advice on hotels, resorts, flights, vacation rentals, vacation packages, and travel guides. The site takes ratings and comments from people who actually took the tour.

One commentator wrote, “I have been on a number of tours with so called guides, but Marv is the best. Picked us up at our hotel, and the entire day was completely enjoyable. He knows more about the Grand Canyon and surrounding area than anyone.”

“Marvelous Marv’s Grand Canyon Tour was a great first day orientation to the Grand Canyon. He picks you up at your hotel in Williams around 9a for a 45 min drive over,” another wrote. “My husband, 9 yr old son, and I enjoyed his extra info shared about the area employees and other facts. He also shows a DVD on the Mule Train during the ride back. I do think this is a great option for folks who do not want to walk as much as he moves you around in his van more than most.”

Marvelous Marv has given tours to the Grand Canyon for years and has been called the “Indiana Jones of the Grand Canyon” by Foder’s®. Marv will not be taking any tours in July due to his honeymoon. Marv was awarded a certificate from TripAdvisor®.
