Elvis, Melvis: Music with a-peel on KZBX

300px-MelvisWILLIAMS — While vacationing in Laughlin, we thought we found the perfect gift for Maggie who manages the Camp Civitan Shop in downtown Williams.

Maggie Peel started her broadcasting career at KZBX 92.1 FM in Williams by broadcasting Elvis tunes for her show Elvis With A-Peel. She even got in early today to purchase her issue of the latest Elvis stamps available at the post office. Thus we got her the Elvis glasses to help get her in character.

Alas, she has changed her format. She still plays Elvis, but added country and contemporary music in the mix. So now her show is just Music With A-Peel. You can hear her show from 4-6 p.m. on KZBX or listen to the show on their web site.

During the day you can meet the mega-radio personality at her day job, and possibly pick up some deals, at the Camp Civitan Thrift Store in downtown Williams next to Old Smokey’s restaurant. Camp Civitan Thrift Shop is currently open from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Williams Independence Day parade a smashing success

640-015-07-04-05WILLIAMS — If Facebook is any gauge, it appears that the historic Route 66 Williams Independence Day parade was a rousing success. Pictures and videos of the parade appeared from Richard Goettel of Phoenix and local resident Brenda Carter. Brenda even caught the Mayor directing traffic.

There was some concern that it might be a wash. Rain came down starting about two hours before the parade, but cleared up. While clouds darkened the city and threatened more rain, it never came.

The parade began with the members of the American Legion Cordova Post #13 carrying the colors. They were followed by the Vietnam Veterans of America. Smokey the Bear was the parade Grand Marshall.

A new addition is the War Memorial Museum of Arizona in their 1942 WWII half-track.640-15-07-04-16It would not be a Williams parade without the Bill Williams Mountain Men—official ambassadors of the State of Arizona, the tractors and the classic cars.

640-15-07-04-34It was good to see Bearizona in the parade this year. The were promoting their upcoming Backwoods BBQ July 25.

640-15-07-04-11Save Meant to Rescue had a tremendous float this year. They get our vote for Number 1. They were surrounded by pets rescued by new owners.

Overall the parade was the best we can remember.

Camp Civitan Afghan raffle

afghan-raffleWILLIAMS – Camp Civitan Thrift store is holding a raffle for a beautiful Afghan blanket created by Pam Hendrickson. Tickets are only $2 each or 3 for $5. The proceeds benefit Camp Civitan and their activities to help people with special needs. Tickets for the drawing may be purchased at the Thrift Store, 129 W. Route 66 in downtown Williams. The drawing will be held sometime just before Christmas.

Camp Civitan holds guessing game

gumballs-01You could receive a $25 gift certificate if you can guess the number of gum balls in this jar. The Camp Civitan Thrift Trading Company is holding the competition at their store at 129 W. Route 66 in Williams. The store is next door to the Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe. The entry fee is only $1.

You might also check out the new and gently used products available at the store which helps fund Camp Civitan which provides camping opportunities and activities for special needs people.

 

Cataract Park open after Saturday dedication

cataract-park-entranceWILLIAMS—Saturday the thirteenth was not unlucky for the residents as they opened the $2.3 million Cataract Lake Park with an eventful dedication. Politicians were there to thank everyone except for Williams Police Sergeant Ted Wigal who directed traffic at entrance. (So we get to be the first to thank him for his service!) I-40 Fleet Services even provided kayaks for rides on the lake.

Mayor John Moore was joined by Williams City Councilmen Hiemenz and Payne for the celebration. District 4 Supervisor Mandy Metzger and District 2 Supervisor Liz Archuleta joined District 3 Supervisor Matt Ryan.

The event was staffed by volunteers from a number of non-profit groups around the community. The American Legion, as usual, conducted the barbeque provided by the city. Camp Civitan provided a van to shuttle people from the parking area to the park. The Kiwanis and Lions Club members served the food. Volunteers staffed the Coke van provided by Swire. Parks and recreation staff were on hand and volunteer children tested the playground during the speeches. The Freshman class of the Williams High School baked and decorated the cake for the cake cutting ceremony.

Northern Arizona Authors Association October meeting

WILLIAMS—The next meeting of the Northern Arizona Authors Association will be Saturday October 13 at Camp Civitan. The meeting will start at 10 am and authors are encouraged to bring material to read to the group. The book collection of short stories by the authors of the group will also be discussed.

In addition, the filmmakers and actors may be filming the trailer for the book “River Thunder.” Anyone involved in the project are urged to come early.

There will be a hike to the edge of Cataract Canyon to film the trailer or just for fun if no filming is done.

Outdoor wear and good shoes for hiking through the forest are recommended.

The camp is located at 5008 North Civitan Road in Williams, Arizona.

Williams Independence Day parade takes over Route 66

WILLIAMS—Dark clouds cooled off the small City of Williams, but did not damper one of the best parades in a number of years. The American Legion Cordova Post #13 led the parade which included local groups, the 108th Army Band and—it must be an election year—politicians. Smokey made an appearance and the Williams Fire Department brought out their fire trucks.

The American Legion Cordova Post #13 carries the colors to begin the parade.

Camp Civitan cook out rescheduled for June 30

WILLIAMS—The Cook Family & Friends cookout to benefit Camp Civitan has been rescheduled from June 23 to the 30th. The event will begin at noon at 4728 White Tail Loop in Williams and run until it ends.

They are seeking volunteers to assist in some of the events and to with food stands. Interested parties can call (951)660-2497 for more information.

Camp Civitan is a camp for special needs people to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment. They also run a thrift store to benefit the organization downtown in the old laundry. In the event that you do not know where the old laundry used to be, it is next to the Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe.
