Cactus Asphalt Williams work schedule

Chip sealing on west end through Country Club Road completed yesterday.

WILLIAMS – Cactus Asphalt passed out flyers, yesterday, concerning the chip seal project they are working on. There is currently no plan to work on Route 66 proper. They are working on the cross-roads and work began today. Tomorrow they will be working from the Mustang station east toward ADOT. Cones and pilot vehicles will be used for worker safety.

They don’t actually have a pilot “car.” It’s more of a pilot truck.

The process begins with cleaning the roads, spraying oil and chip seal and leaving it overnight. The next day they re-clean the area and open it up. They will be working from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thursday and Friday they will be chip sealing the two-mile stretch from Santa Fe dam to Dogtown Road. One lane will be open for traffic. They ask that you follow the directions of construction workers and wait for pilot vehicle

Planning a trip on Forest Roads? Don’t take the bus.

WILLIAMS – Another tour bus seems to have fallen victim to the strong winter weather we are experiencing. A tour bus got stuck apparently trying to use Dogtown Road as a turn-around off of Perkinsville Road (County 73) two-miles south of Williams. Coconino County has been notified but no details are known at this time.

In January the Coconino County Sheriff’s office and Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to an incident where a tour bus with 45 passengers got stuck four-miles off of highway 180 on Forest Road 417. Highway 180 had been closed due to drifting snow in Kendrick Park and the driver used GPS to find an alternate route.

Forest roads are not paved and some are rarely maintained, particularly in the winter. The amount of snow melt-off has caused all of our lakes to overflow. This same melting snow causes the roads to become muddy and soft easily bogging down many vehicles. The safest course is to stick to the paved roads until forest roads dry out in spring.

Perkinsville road gets a facelift

south-road-15-06-15-18WILLIAMS — Perkinsville road, commonly known as South road, received a much needed re-paving. Today the lines have been added.

Perkinsville road leads to Benham Trail, Dogtown lake, White Horse Lake and a number of other popular camping and day use spots. With the fair winter and recent rains, the trees are full of leaves making this a beautiful drive.

To access South Road, travel south on Fourth Street. Turn right off of Route 66 and left from Railroad Avenue onto Fourth Street.
